RUBY BOOTSAt Last Bex Chilcott is unequivocally one of the most talented female songstresses in the country, and her vocals are a force to be reckoned with, pairing strong lusty old school tones with an incredible band to boot. Devil starts off the record with some frenzied fiddle from violinist Eliza Rogers and forceful, chilling, Laura Marling-esque vocals from Chilcott. The song begins with the illusion of an honest country ditty, but as soon as the vocals kick in, you’ll realise there is nothing innocent about Ruby Boots. Sweet Time is one of the greatest toe-tapping hoedowns this critic has heard in a long time, and damn, if it doesn’t make you chuck on a straw hat and do some boot-scooting, who knows what will. Small City Blues is bone-chillingly beautiful, and the subject matter is something that so many listeners will identify with. No criticisms can be made of this album, except perhaps that there is only six tracks – more, more, more! If you don’t already own At Last, go directly to your chosen method of purchasing music and buy it immediately – you won’t regret it. |
