RUSSIAN WINTERSLast Battles Produced by Dave Parkin, Last Battles is a mammoth effort from the Perth boys, and will doubtlessly receive high praises from critics and fans. First single Pacific will definitely get stuck in your head with highly infectious vocals and a solid, mainstream indie rock sound. This track and the first from the album, Race To The Mountains, pay just enough respect to The Killers’ musical stylings without being too similar. Verhoeven will reel in any listener no matter what genre they subscribe to. It’s a big song, complete with a jangly brassy feel, misleading low-key breakdowns, and a chorus that’ll have you chanting along with vocalist Kris Dimitroff. The band plays around with the ever-expanding ‘indie’ genre, throwing in some horns, a bit of ‘80s-inspired pop, distorted vocals, and even the occasional snippet of electro pop. Despite being constantly likened to current indie kings Foals, it’s not difficult to identify the older influences of the band, namely ‘80s legends like The Cure (particularly on songs like Play) and of course, alt-rock band idols Radiohead. Russian Winters have been gaining some significant exposure through Triple J, and are already dominating the Perth scene – no doubt this album will shove them into the spotlight for good. |
